Birch tree mural update

By Ian Harvey

A series of murals in Birch Cliff is nearing completion with the announcement of the final location for this phase of the project.

The Bell Box at Birchcliff Ave. and Kingston Road by artist Emily Harrison has been completed, the Warden Ave. underpass at Danforth is just steps aware from finishing and the panels to be hung on Birch Cliff Public School are completed and just awaiting approval and installation by the Toronto District School Board.

New mural in the works

Karin Eaton of Mural Routes, which is project managing the Birch Cliff Community Mural Project on behalf of the community, said Mural #3 is said to go on the wall at 1720 Kingston Road – the Taxaction office.

Artist Anthony Delacruz, a set decorator at CBC Television who also painted the birch trees mural at Warden Avenue and Kingston Road – will be the lead painter but can only work on the project during weekends because of his job, said Eaton.

Underpass to be finished in September

Rob Watson of the City of Toronto, which is responsible for the Warden under pass mural, says the centre pillars have been completed and the southeast side just needs some detail work which should be done by the end of September.

He said the underpass is a “gateway” mural in that it marks the entrance to Birch Cliff and that the city envisions a series of murals in Scarborough in a triangle marked by Lawrence Ave East to Port Union and back along the lakeshore to Victoria Park.

First up is a recommendation to paint the underpass at the Danforth-Kingston Road split.

More murals could come in future phases pending funding, said Eaton.

    |I walk by the Warden overpass on a regular basis. The mural is a wonderful picture of the past. It is lovely and I hope that you continue with this endeavour, we need and appreciate the work that these artists are doing. Keep it up.

The Birchcliff murals look beautiful in the photos – I know they will be even better when I can see them for myself.
