Target opens March 28

Attention Birch Cliff shoppers – the opportunity has arrived  to see if Target lives up to the hype.

The local Target store has its “soft opening” tomorrow (March 28th) in the old Zeller’s location at Shopper’s World, at Danforth and Victoria Park.

The American chain store has done a formidable job of promoting the launch of 124 stores across Canada and it will be interesting to see if the deals are similar to what they are in the US.

There has been grumbling that Target’s prices in Canada are not on par with the US.

The Ottawa Citizen today is quoting Target Canada President Tony Fisher on the reason why:

“Transportation costs are higher, distribution costs are higher, fuel costs are higher, wage rates vary across the country, the tax rates are different, cost of goods are different, the duties — I think the scale we have here in Canada is quite different from the incredibly different, densely populated U.S. marketplace,” he said.

Local retail in flux

The Target grand opening is the first of several developments that are about to change the local retail landscape.

More than a few Birch Cliff News readers have contacted us to ask what’s happening with the new Dollarama on Kingston Road at Warden, which was expected to open in January.

The company has refused to comment on its plans, but D.O.T. Furniture President Tony Niceforo has confirmed that Dollarama has indeed leased the space and will be opening soon.

What’s going in at the Quarry?

And then, of course, there’s the million dollar question about the Quarry:  Who is the anticipated tenant for the 110,000 square foot big box store proposed by Build Toronto?

Stay tuned !  And if you head out to Target tomorrow, feel free to leave a comment and let us know your opinion.

I guess I’m dreaming to hope that the new retail where the driving range once stood will be a Golf Town. I miss the driving range, still sad to see it go.
