The Birch Cliff Public School playground was crowded with hundreds of people on Saturday, enjoying the annual Fun Fair designed to bring the community together and raise money for classroom resources that enhance learning.

Children and adults like enjoyed the bouncy castles, inflated slide, rock climbing wall, dunk tank, face painting, henna tattoos, silent auction and more, all the while gulping down burgers, baked goods and cotton candy.

“My favorite part of today was the Flying Squirrel. It was really fun. You got hooked up to a harness and you swung across the room,” said 11-year old Maya, a Birch Cliff student.

12-year old Jake said his favourite part of the Fun Fair was the food.  “I ate a No Bull burger, cotton candy and an ice cone. It’s just really good,” Jake said.

“You can see the joy and the laughter of kids. It’s a reflection of a vibrant community,” said Parthi Kandavel, Ward 18’s Toronto District School Board trustee. “The Fun Fair is not just about having a fun place for kids but a place to build and strengthen the bonds and the relationships between people in our community, with parents, teachers, staff, community members who live in the area and new families who are coming to JK.”

Kerry Cotton, chair of the Parent Council, said they’ve been organizing the Fun Fair since January.  She said they hope to raise between $10,000 and $12,000 to pay for things that aren’t covered in the curriculum, such as visits from “Scientists in School”, math fundamentals, extra books for the library, and iPads and Chromebooks

“The money we raise today is really going back into our community and supporting our school in order to make our kids have a more memorable learning experience within our school,” Cotton said.
