Wouldn’t it be great if we could still walk down the street and go see a movie on the big screen in the heart of Birch Cliff?
The photo of the day for July 10, 2012 is of the old Birchcliff Theatre on Kingston Road, where people used to do exactly that.
The Birchcliff Theatre was built in 1949 and closed in 1974, unable to compete with the new multi-screen cinemas.
It was torn down in 1977.

The Birchcliff Theatre was not replaced by the ambulance station. The ambulance station used to be a gas station and the theatre was where the townhouses are located now.

I worked there from the time I was 13 (1965) until I was 18 or 19 .
Many many memories . Changing that marquis in the bitter winter … dating all the cute candy counter girls ….
Remember fire at St Nicholas Church which forced the church to hold its services on Sundays at the movie theatre for many months. Also remember my mom attending specialty cooking classes on Saturday mornings at the theatre. It was so special to attend the movies in this theatre. Wish it was still there.
